Mini Conference: Adam and Human Origins

Description: The question of human origins continues to play a central role in understanding who we are as people. In the face of challenges to the identity, or even existence of Adam, creationists can find firm support from both scripture and rigorous methods of scientific investigation. Taken together, the results allow us to piece together a view of human history that is consistent with young-Earth creationism. This topic is presented in two seminars on Saturday morning from 9:00 AM until 12 noon.

  1. Recovering Adam, Part 1
  2. Recovering Adam, Part 2

There will be an extended time for Q&A after the second seminar with breaks between the seminars, and extended Q&A after the second seminar.

Seminar 1: Recovering Adam, Part 1 — This presentation introduces the current state of discussion regarding Adam in evangelical circles, surveying recent novel proposals that seek to reimagine our first parents in important ways. We then explore the biblical evidence for the historical Adam from both the Old and New Testaments, noting the connections to important Christian doctrines. Rather than being a peripheral or low-tier issue, the existence of Adam and Eve and their position as the sole progenitors of all humanity is powerfully evidenced and richly integrated in biblical theology.

Seminar 2: Recovering Adam, Part 2 — With Adam and Eve established as historical, this presentation turns to scientific questions of humanity’s origins. We begin with a geological exploration to establish the post-Flood geological context of the hominin fossil record. Next we define and explore the hominin fossil record and creationist methods of identifying humans vs. non-humans from fossil data. We then test these hypotheses using the anthropological record of cultural artifacts and capabilities associated with various hominins. Finally, these results are incorporated into a proposal of human history from Adam to Abraham.

SpeakerDr. Marcus Ross has taught college science classes for over twenty years in the areas of creation, geology, paleontology, biology, and more. Dr. Ross has loved paleontology (especially dinosaurs) since he was a kid growing up in Rhode Island. After earning a B.S. in Earth Science from the Pennsylvania State University, he continued his studies with a M.S. in Vertebrate Paleontology from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science (Geoscience) from the University of Rhode Island.

Dr. Ross taught for 16 years at Liberty University as Professor of Geology, where he also served as Director of the Center for Creation Studies and is currently a Fellow of the Center. With most of his classes dedicated to non-science majors, he is at ease speaking about scientific topics to layman audiences and young learners. His lectures and presentations are highly visual since geology is better seen through images than described in words, and his teaching style is very active, with some lectures including audience participation.
